Alcatel-Lucent Signs $1.7 Billion Agreement with China Mobile and China Telecom

Alcatel-Lucent has entered onto framework agreements with China Mobile and China Telecom. Valued at $1.7 billion in total, this agreement provides network upgrades, integration and maintenance services to China Mobile (News - Alert) and China Telecom in 2009.

With this agreement, China mobile and China Telecom (News - Alert) will look to utilize Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise and improve their network capacity and performance. This agreement is also expected to enable these two companies with the ability to provide end-users with a variety of high quality mobile services.

As the leading operators in China, China Mobile and China Telecom were granted 3G licenses in January 2009, for TD-SCDMA and CDMA/EV-DO technologies, respectively. Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access, or TD-SCDMA, is a channel access method that utilizes synchronous spread spectrum across multiple time slots. CDMA/EV-DO is a standard for high speed wireless broadband. The acronym is short for "Evolution, Data Only" or "Evolution, Data Optimized".

Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) will provide its GSM/EDGE solutions to China Mobile and under an agreement is valued approximately USD 1 billion. The company will also provide TD-SCDMA wireless networking equipment, optical, microwave and IP transmission offerings, IP service routers, application platforms and related services under the agreement.

“We are honored to have been selected as a major provider of cutting-edge solutions for China Mobile and China Telecom. Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell is fully committed to supporting their rapid transformation to 3G, and their smooth evolution to LTE (News - Alert)/4G in the future”, said Olivia Qiu, head of Alcatel-Lucent activities in East Asia and President of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell. “The agreements also set the stage for future collaboration.”

China Telecom will get 3G CDMA/EV-DO networking equipment, application platforms, optical and IP transmission platforms, IP service routers and network maintenance services from Alcatel-Lucent.

Recently, Alcatel-Lucent joined the RSA (News - Alert) Secured Partner Program. This certification validates that the technical interoperability has been proven between the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian (NLG) and the RSA SecurID system. Now, Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile security solution for enterprises can make use of RSA SecurID two factor authentication systems and provide increased security for the mobile workforce.
