Fiji marks Digicel’s fifth market in the Pacific, according to the company, following launches in Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Vanuatu.
Vanessa Slowey, chief executive officer at Digicel Pacific, said that Fiji is Digicel’s twenty-eighth market launch worldwide.
She said that Digicel Fiji will provide “innovative” and “accessible” telecommunications services that meet and exceed customer demand, and advance Fiji’s mobile technology to an entirely new level.
In Fiji, the company has invested $70 million to date, and has built a “state-of-the-art” network, officials say. Digicel says it’ll provide Fijians with nationwide coverage, around-the-clock customer care, a wide range of handsets, and high-value services.
In May, the company received a license in Fiji, and since then company said that it has put together a highly trained and skilled workforce of more than 170 employees. In addition, it has also created about 10,000 additional jobs through its local dealerships and partners.
Digicel is offering per second billing, rollover minutes, international post-paid and prepaid roaming and bundled voice minutes with Blackberry. Also, the company is offering a wide range of mobile handsets for both prepaid and post-paid customers.
At present, the company has opened 14 modern flagship stores and has more than 25,000 top-up locations across the country. The company is led by John Delves, officially titled the chief executive officer at Digicel Fiji.
With more than 95 percent coverage in Fiji, Digicel Pacific said that it aims to create a seamless pan-Pacific network that facilitates affordable communications.
The company also said that it’s hosting a free concert in Fiji, featuring local artists and international star, Sean Kingston, from Jamaica, New Zealand band, KatchaFire, and several Fijian artists and dance groups. The concert will be held in the capital, Suva, and over 50,000 people are expected to attend.
In August, Digicel expanded its services in Papua New Guinea with the launch of the so-called “Bigger, Better Network” in Tabubil, of the Western province.
Launched in the South Pacific in November 2006, Digicel Pacific is a mobile operator in the Pacific, with current operations in Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea and now Fiji.
