ACCESS and NTT DOCOMO Finalize Agreement for ACCESS Linux Platform

ACCESS Company today announced it has finalized a System Engineering Assistance agreement with NTT DOCOMO.

Under the agreement, ACCESS will develop the technical specifications for co-developing an operator pack for ACCESS Linux Platform for DOCOMO's FOMA 3G handsets. FOMA (Freedom Of Mobile multimedia Access) is the brand name for NTT DOCOMO's 3G services, and was the world's first W-CDMA 3G service, launched in 2001. During August, the two companies are targeting the conclusion of an agreement detailing software development work for the FOMA operator pack.

The FOMA operator pack is an integrated application package that implements services such as i-mode. It will run on ACCESS Linux Platform, an open, flexible and scalable shared Linux-based platform that allows the creation of world-class mobile phones and supports the specifications of the LiMo Foundation (News - Alert). Development of the FOMA operator pack for ACCESS Linux Platform will also enable mobile handset manufacturers worldwide to provide immediate support for DOCOMO on their own devices.

ACCESS and DOCOMO play leading roles in the LiMo Foundation, a dedicated consortium of mobile industry leaders working together to deliver an open and globally consistent handset software platform based on Mobile Linux. By promoting a LiMo-compliant solution using ACCESS Linux Platform, the two companies will help mobile handset OEMs and ODMs develop high-performance handsets more efficiently, increase coordination between operators and handset makers, and further energize innovation in the mobile phone market.

ACCESS is a global company providing innovative technology, software products and platforms for Web browsing, mobile phones, wireless handhelds, and other networked devices. ACCESS' product portfolio, including its NetFront Browser, Garnet OS (formerly Palm OS) and ACCESS Linux Platform, provides customers with solutions that enable faster time to market, flexibility and customizability. The company, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, operates subsidiaries and affiliates within Asia, Europe and the United States. ACCESS is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mother's Index under the number 4813.

NTT DOCOMO is a global mobile communications company, serving over 53 million customers, including 45 million people subscribing to FOMATM, launched as the world's first 3G mobile service based on W-CDMA in 2001. DOCOMO also offers a wide variety of leading-edge mobile multimedia services, including i-mode, the world's most popular mobile e-mail/Internet service, used by 48 million people. With the addition of credit- card and other e-wallet functions, DOCOMO mobile phones have become highly versatile tools for daily life.
