TOT, Thailand’s largest telecommunications company, has selected solutions from 3Com (News - Alert) Corporation, provider of converged networking solutions for enterprises, to offer network communications infrastructure at the Bangkok Government Center.

 

The contract with 3Com is part of a $9.6 million tender with 40,000 LAN-port networks. Once installed, the network will connect several different buildings within the complex, covering an area of 929,800 square meters and servicing 30,000 employees in 33 departments.

 

Security is one of the major focus areas for any enterprise. Besides a comprehensive security system, 3Com products and solutions support both voice and data convergence applications.

 

The brand new project at the Bangkok Government Center will be installed within the next few months. This is one of the largest deployments in the region, the company said.

 

Initiated by the Thai Ministry of Finance in 2003, the Bangkok Government Center project will house 28 government agencies. The project is designed to provide energy efficiency and quality of life for government employees.

 

As per the multi-million dollar contract, Thailand’s largest telecommunications company will deploy 3Com SCN solutions including the switch 5500-EI family of stackable gigabit switches and the switch 9500 series of 10-gigabit multi-service core routing switches.

 

TOT will also deploy intrusion prevention systems and network access control solutions from 3Com’s TippingPoint division. Besides these, Secpath firewall system from 3Com-H3C that integrates firewall, denial-of-service protection, virtual private network (VPN) and traffic management capabilities are also being deployed.

 

“3Com won the deal because our solutions offer two to three times the switching performance at a 30 to 40 percent lower price point than our biggest competitor,” said Peter Chai, vice president and general manager, 3Com Asia Pacific. “Moreover, 3Com’s switches support the integration of open source applications into the network fabric which gives TOT flexibility to add new services to the network when needed.”
