Finisar's Wavelength Selection Switch (WSS) Now Available

Finisar Corporation has announced that its 50 GHz Wavelength Selection Switch (WSS) for 10 and 40Gbps telecom and data communication networks will soon be available.

Finisar’s next-generation Wavelength Selection Switches are qualified to Telcordia (News - Alert) standards and it is a production-qualified device. It provides dual and mixed channel spacing for 50 and 100 GHz channel plans. These Wavelength Selection Switches (WSS) will be available throughout the world in large numbers.

These WSS devices are flexible and reconfigurable which increases the 40G capacity in the network cost effectively, and is most suitable for applications from the core of the network to its edge. Finisar’s WSS devices use the LCoS technology which is much more advantageous than the traditional WSS and Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM (News - Alert)) line card implementations.

It also offers dynamic reconfiguration for adapting to changes in traffic demand, mixed/dual channel plans, and programmable channel contouring and filter shaping. LCoS helps increase reliability besides enhancing bandwidth performance as it has no moving parts.

“With our LCoS-based Wavelength Selection Switches, Finisar continues to integrate intelligent features into our WSS and ROADM portfolio to provide customers with the most reliable 40 Gbps products at the lowest cost,” said Dr. Allen Conduit, vice president and general manager of WSS technology at Finisar.

“Volume availability coupled with software-defined optical functionality will enable Finisar to target new applications and market segments,” added Dr. Allen.

Finisar’s new Wavelength Selection Switches come in multiple configurations like 1x9 and 1x4 (drop) and 9x1 and 4x1 (add) modules with both 50 and 100 GHz channel spacing. This offers telecom and data communication networks more options and flexibility.

Finisar proposes to showcase its 50 GHz WSS and other ROADM products at ECOC which is taking place in Brussels.

Sunnyvale-based Finisar Corporation specializes in fiber optic subsystems and network test systems. These products enable high-speed voice, video and data communications for networking, storage, wireless, and cable TV applications. Finisar provides critical optics technologies to system manufacturers for catering to their demands of increased network bandwidth and storage.
