Virtual treasures: Decatur native sells jewelry, photography on crafty Web site ? Etsy.com(The Decatur Daily (AL) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 13--The virtual aisles of Etsy.com feature toddler T-shirts with patchwork owls, to hand-sewn totes featuring a three-eyed woman.Etsy.com is an online store for all things artistic, crafty and do-it-yourself. On the site, people who hand-make items such as clothing, jewelry, ceramics and purses can sell their wares, as well as commune with other people with the urge to create. Decatur native Robin Lynne started selling her jewelry on the Etsy.com three years ago. Using silver-plated and sterling silver wire, glass beads, buttons and found objects like diary keys and bottle caps, the 21-year-old creates earrings, necklaces, and rings and hairpins with an "aww, how cute!" quality. Items for sale include a hairpin embellished with a wire bird's nest, a ring made with three overlapping pink buttons, and a colorful necklace fashioned from woven glass beads. "People just kind of randomly find me on there and purchase stuff," she said. While some customers buy what is shown on the site, others request custom-made items for special occasions like weddings or baby showers. Many of Lynne's items are priced at $15 to $30. The self-described starving artist eloped last year with husband Joe Riggs in Las Vegas' "The Little White Wedding Chapel," and the two now reside in Savannah, Ga. -- a place she loves for its mossy trees and blooming azaleas. Her mother, Vonda Raney, still lives in Decatur. Lynne launched her jewelry business because she could rarely find the pieces she wanted. "I realized, 'Hey, I could make it myself and not have to pay for someone else's work,' " she said. "I have the satisfaction that I made this and can tell someone else that." It typically takes the young artisan about 30 minutes to two hours to make one piece. Along with selling jewelry, Lynne also sells her photographs on Etsy and her Web site, robinlynne.org. Her photos are often nature-oriented. She also plans to start making soap, an idea she got after noticing the item's popularity on Etsy. While she considered opening a bricks-and-mortar store to house her many creations, Lynne said, she thinks she'll stick to the more flexible online selling for now. "I have so many ideas and I just don't think I could focus on one thing," she said.
